ABOUT SEGWAY HT Segway HT is an electric powered, two-wheeled personal transportation device invented by Dean Kamen in 2001, aftermore than 10 years of research. It was promoted by the codename ‘Ginger’ (conjuring up the manoeuvrability of Ginger Rogers ) and ‘IT’ (Intelligent Transport) in early 2001. Dean Kamen introduced his innovative product to the world in December 2001. Aimed at transforming the human transport and urban life, Segway HT was designed to traverse short distances within the cities... COMMERCIALISING SEGWAY HT Inspired by the pre-launch publicity and the prediction of John Doerr, a Segway board member and partner of Kleiner Perkins Caulfield&Byers, that Segway HT sales would be reaching $1 billion in less time than any other start-up company,15 Dean Kamen established a 77,000 square-foot factory in Bradford, New Hampshire, in 2002, to manufacture 40,000 Segway HTs per month. The targeted sales figure was 50,000 to 60,000 units in 2002. Dean Kamen also formed a separate company, ‘Segway LLC’, to further develop and commercialise Segway HT... A BUMPY START Though 200 companies had purchased the transporter, Segway lacked bulk sales by December 2002, as companies were not willing to take a chance with a new technological product in the tough economic environment.
